Week 10: 10,000 Steps!

This week, we are at 10,000 steps. I remember last summer when I first began tracking my steps every day. I thought at first that 10,000 steps a day seemed like a lot. However, I was quickly taking 10,000 steps in my daily workout. This, for some reason, was difficult for others to believe that I walk 10,000 steps a day....like somehow it was a goal I couldn't achieve. Maybe it was a goal they didn't believe they could achieve.

First of all, 10,000 steps aren't as many as you might think. It's roughly a five miles workout, which I can do outside in less than two hours. My normal walking pace is about one mile every twenty minutes. I could complete a 10,000 steps workout outside in about 1 hour 40 minutes. I usually put in some earbuds, turn on my favorite walking playlist, and away I go. Before I know it, it's time to go home. Usually, I get home and find that I walked more than 10,000 steps.

What if you aren't at that point, you ask? That's okay, too. The average person walks at least 2,000 steps a day. For me, that is a low number. If I don't exercise at all, my average step count is somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 steps a day. That includes daily chores, errands, cleaning, or whatever else I might be doing that day.

A good way to get to 10,000 steps might be to start with whatever your baseline is. For example, if your baseline (the average number of steps you take a day) is around 3,500 steps, then you know you need to add 6,500 steps for the rest of the day. That is about 3.25 miles or about 1 hour 15 minutes in walking time. There are several ways you can get these steps in. I like to do my steps walking around the basement while I am watching my favorite TV shows. You also may go outside (since the weather will soon be warmer) and walk around your neighborhood. You may also increase your daily activity level to add those extra steps.

I also sit at my desk most of the day, so one of the ways I increased my steps was to get up every hour. I have a chore list that I do. Every time I stood up from my desk, I would do a chore. Sometimes, I would start preparing what I was planning to cook for dinner. Don't forget that even when you are cooking, you are taking steps around your kitchen.  If you work in an office, you can take a walk around the block on your break. And, my personal favorite way to get in all the steps is to set aside some time (at least an hour for 10,000 steps) that's just for you to get your steps in every day. That way, you are having focused time for exercise and for yourself.
