Planning Your Day Like You Plan Your Clothes

by Jeanette R. Harrison

Do you remember laying your clothes out the night before school? You had a plan for what you were going to wear the next day.

I still do that—at least mentally. I plan what I can wear each day for the week. And yet, no matter how much time I give myself, I always seem to be rushing. So I grab a pair of earrings, a scarf, a bag, or the right shoes— something that makes me look and feel a little more put together. Like I did more than lie in bed the night before, right before my prayers and meditation, deciding what I was going to wear.

Even as I’m writing this, I already know what I’m going to wear to a meeting tomorrow.

The thing is, we put so much thought into planning what we’re going to wear—but how much thought do we put into planning our day?

Part of my morning ritual is drinking my coffee
and going through my plans for the day.

It’s like the old saying: you can’t just plan for your wedding; you have to plan for your marriage, too.

I’m a planner through and through. I often joke that I’m such a planner I literally have a degree in planning. I have plans all over my house—a list for cleaning, a dry-erase calendar with daily goals like walk, meditate, read, clean. I’ve been thinking about swapping “clean” for “write,” since I already have a cleaning list.

I have a strategic marketing plan for my business. I try to set daily earnings goals, though I’m having difficulty reaching them. I’m figuring out how to take actionable steps each day to move closer—reassessing and resetting as needed. That’s what’s been on my mind tonight.

And tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s gratitude practice is about being thankful for having a magical day—being grateful in advance for everything working out for me. So I’m planning for my day to go well. I’m grateful that it’s going to. I’m grateful that everything will work out for me tomorrow.

Tomorrow isn’t here yet, but part of my plan is to have a great day—and to be thankful for everything wonderful that happens. I’m also choosing to be grateful for the great news that’s coming to me tomorrow.

What is the great news?
I have no idea.

But I’m planning on it. I believe in it. And I’m grateful for it.

The Best Part of My Day

Realizing that the love and care I put out into the world will come back to me someday, in some way.

10 Things I Am Grateful for Today

  2. I’m grateful for all the pantry staples I had to make homemade chili today.

  3. I’m grateful that Amazon finally delivers groceries in my area.

  4. I’m grateful that I’m going to find my purple wallet. I know I will.

  5. I’m grateful for the folding table I bought myself on Black Friday.

  6. I’m grateful that I have a vision to do expos—and that’s why I bought the table.

  7. I’m grateful that I’m a self-reflective person.

  8. I’m grateful for how much I’ve grown and changed over the past five years.

  9. I’m grateful for everyone who reads these posts. Thank you so much.

  10. I’m grateful for my writing—for giving me a way to express myself and share my life and feelings with others.
